My 4 month old baby used to feed for 20 minutes and now only feeds for 5 minutes. What should I do?
Infants become more efficient at feeding as they grow and develop. Your breasts have also become more efficient at producing milk. The end result is that feed times become quicker but your infant is taking a bigger volume of milk. A fully breast fed infant is getting adequate nutrition if:
- The infant has 5 very wet disposable nappies or 6-8 wet cloth nappies in 24 hours. The urine should be light in colour and not have strong odour.
- The baby has good skin colour and muscle tone
- Baby is alert and reasonable contented
- There is some weight gain and growth in length and head circumference.
Some babies will snuggle up to the breast for longer times for comfort but the actual feeding with deep jaw movements and milk transference is quick.
