My 6 week old baby was breastfeeding really well but now I don’t think I have any milk left as he wants feeding all the time. Should I give him a bottle of formula?

Almost all mothers are capable of producing enough milk for their infant. Everything your baby needs to grow strong and healthy is in your milk so a bottle of formula is not necessary.

There may be other reasons why your infant is fussing. Some of your baby’s cues can be confusing. Sucking is comforting to an infant and the cues that look like hunger can mean that the infant is overfed and has a tummy ache.

A young baby has a small stomach which can only hold a small amount of milk. This means that they need to feed frequently. A fully breast fed infant is getting adequate nutrition if:

  • The infant has 5 very wet disposable nappies or 6-8 wet cloth nappies in 24 hours. The urine should be light in colour and not have strong odour.
  • The baby has good skin colour and muscle tone
  • Baby is alert and reasonable contented
  • There is some weight gain and growth in length and head circumference.

Your milk supply can be boosted in several ways:

  • By offering extra feeds throughout the day, a well attached baby feeding frequently and efficiently means more milk will be made.
  • Top–up feeds in the evening can also boost supply. Offer both breasts at each feed.
  • Look after yourself.
  • Ensure you get adequate rest and healthy food.
  • Limit or cease using the dummy, as the infant will give the breast less stimulation if his/her sucking needs are met with a dummy.

The Child and Family Health Nurse can observe a breastfeed to assess the attachment of your baby to the breast.
